Danny returned to the US from England in 1990, became qualified as a railroad locomotive engineer and worked throughout the midwest. Although he still continued to practice, study, write, visit jam sessions and the occasional gig, Danny for all intents and purposes took a sabbatical from recording with the exception of two album projects. The first of these from 1993 was DALP 14, The Rudy Van Gelder Jazz LP.
This is the Mother’s Day album Volumes 1 & 2. Mother’s Day was recorded live on a Thursday night in February 1999 at Sonny’s Blues lounge on Reading Road in Cincinnati about a mile from where Danny grew up. In contrast to the Rudy Van Gelder Jazz album, this program is “Deep in the Alley” Rhythm & Blues with a real Cincinnati flavour. Featured on this album is Johnny “Jug” Green, an incredible drummer (Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons) and Danny’s mentor and friend, Cincinnati’s beloved Russell Givens on bass, who schooled many a local musician including Bootsy Collins, who particularly displays Russell’s stylistic influence. Russell also played with Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed and Lou Rawls in Chicago during the 1960’s. For many years, Russell was a mainstay in the bands of great Cincinnati Bluesmen, Albert T. Washington, H-Bomb Ferguson and Otis “Elevator” Gilmore (please see DALPs 12 & 13).
